Tight, stinging, reactive skin in cold months is usually barrier damage. The fix is mostly about doing less.
Cold air, indoor heating and hot showers strip the lipid layer that holds moisture in your skin. Once that barrier is compromised, products that were previously fine begin to sting, and skin feels tight no matter how much moisturiser goes on.
How to tell your barrier is damaged
- Products that never stung suddenly do
- Tightness that returns within minutes of moisturising
- New rough or flaky patches
- Redness that lingers longer than it used to
- Skin that feels simultaneously dry and congested
The repair approach
Counterintuitively, the answer is to remove things rather than add them. Pause all actives — retinoids, acids, vitamin C — for two to three weeks. Switch to a cream cleanser, moisturise while skin is still damp, and keep showers warm rather than hot.
How long it takes
Most barriers recover within two to four weeks of consistent gentle care. Reintroduce actives one at a time afterwards, at reduced frequency — twice a week before nightly.
When skin is angry, the instinct is to treat it harder. It almost always needs less.
